This is not about growing a moustache for charity, although our FT considers she would look rather dashing with facial hair. It is, instead, about a guinea pig called Mo :>)

Movember

Last Autumn,
there were three guineas
in the Winchcombe garden
Duchess, Truffle, and Monty.

This Autumn,
there are three guineas
in the Winchcombe garden
Duchess, Truffle, and... Mo.

Mo is the daughter
of Monty and Truffle
and she has three brothers
Eeny, Meeny, Miny
rehomed, renamed.

Mo looked a lot like Monty at first,
born long-locked and silver,
but throughout her first year
her hair has shortened and lightened,
to buttery gold.

Her spirit remains her father's, though,
as, eating with Truffle and Duchess,
she pauses to sniff a little
and squeak excitedly,
before leaping ecstatically
into the air!

Mo leaps, ecstatic, in the air
around the cider apple tree,
sun shining on her golden hair,

then lands awhile to sit and stare
before another glad Whee-hee!
Mo leaps, ecstatic, in the air

of windblown apple, plum, and pear
and music of the bumbling bee,
sun shining on her golden hair,

and sniffs towards the crop rows, where
there's ryegrass growing fresh for tea,
Mo leaps, ecstatic, in the air,

brown Truffle nudges snacks to share,
and Mo eats fodderbeets with glee,
sun shining on her golden hair,

we smile and watch her from my chair,
this little life, such joy to see;
Mo leaps, ecstatic, in the air,
sun shining on her golden hair.

How wonderful. Does she really leap into the air? or is it your marvelous imagination again? I enjoyed reading about your little ones :)

Whatever form it is, it is a delightful poem. Hooray for Mo!

Oh, excellent! What a skilfully wrought diptych of poems! I like villanelles a lot, and I have rarely seen a villanelle made with such sureness and dexterity as the one here. Many thanks for "Movember"! -- perhaps my new favourite month!

Kathy Lockhart
This is so adorable.

I am so thankful you posted this to share
and I came along to find here.
As I read and read it in my chair
thinking of Mo and her buttery golden hair.

What a beautiful, carefree picture you gave me for this evening. Thank you again. :)
