*Torio, Panama. A town by the sea where I live.

The "Wild" Women of Torio

This town where all is known
And nothing is understood
Where nothing is as it seems
And everything is the way it's always been.

Here live the women who stand by the side of the road
wearing the shortest of short shorts
talking on their cell phones
and riding on a horse.

At night they dance half naked at the bars
These so called “wild” women
Are not all that different from the respectable ones
Who stay home while their husbands work
Waiting for the passing truck drivers
and the policeman on patrol.

This is coast country, humid and hot,
Where female recklessness runs deep
Where there are short shorts and thongs and cameras for selfies,
With underwear or none.

These wild women can never hide their innocence.
A kind of pity-kitty hopefulness that their prince is on his way.

The tough ones with their box cutters and dirty talk,
The glossy ones with two seated cars and a purse full of drugs,
Even the ones who wear scars like presidential medals,
can’t hide that inner child:

The winsome baby girl who is curled up somewhere inside.

All of them have a sad story: too much notice, not enough,
Or the worst kind, some tale about a monster daddy, or a false-hearted man
There are those with mean mamas or friend who did them wrong

Each story has a monster in it who made them tough or weak instead of brave,
So they open their legs rather than their hearts,
Where that folded hurting child is kept tucked.

This is so good and so true of many I suppose. Hard heart is the worst condition of all. When a hand is given only to be ignored or slapped away it is hard to present again. Are they happy? Do they know if they are happy? Do they care? As usual your observational story has made me think.

Ah, paradise

A beautiful group portrait, Ashe. I really enjoyed this.

This is a strong poem, and a tough reality.

The first stanza, though, seems to be a poem in itself—mysterious Torio.
