Breadwinner

In the early eighties, Pizza Hut sponsored the program Bookit to promote reading.
For every ten books read, I’d get a certificate For a free one topping pizza.

At the end of each month, I’d come home from Ms. Mathew’s English class
And slam down the BookIt Certificate in front of my then parents. Like a hunter dropping a deer carcass on the kitchen table. In one month I had provided my then family with 40 servings of garlic bread.

It turns out there is no greater pleasure than reading for pizza. No longer did I feel guilty about eschewing the “real” world for these fantasy zones. Now I had an unassailable American motivation:
I was a breadwinner!
