Tolstoy’s Final Lesson

With that beard all overflowing
Leo was nearing the end of his days
He walked away from everything
Literati conjectures on his last phase
I know where Tolstoy was going
Though he didn’t even know himself
He wanted to give away reason
And the countless diaries on his shelf
Trains cross the freezing tundra
Old men argue the philosophies of life
In the field by a barren larch tree
A little green stick and a hapless wife
Both dance together in comfort
Though not reading of any expression
The world has not enough music
For men to laugh at fate’s final lesson
