Counterclockwise

“Here I am” said the absent man
“Far away” whispered yesterday
The hands on the clock
Got a deathly shock
When the earth span the other way

People returned over bridges burned
A man on the moon returned too soon
Leaders raised grins
Over double chins
And resigned so that they could stay

And as all this came to pass
The children all sat and laughed
For despite their years
They had been given no fears
And knew silliness at any time of day
