This is in response to the Manchester bombing.

Arena

The Romans were here
Encamped by the river,
Fort and amphitheatre
Marked the spots where
Lives were loved and lost,
Where Janus put on his
Makeup and blew kisses
To the past and to the future.

The barbarians were here
Encamped by the river,
Dredging up the past
And watching the future
Enter the festive arena,
Listening to the laughter
Of innocence and the timbre
Of excited youth.

The Roman fort has long gone,
But the barbarians still lurk,
They despise the entertainment
Of the arena, the fancies and the
Frivolities of the rouged crowds;
The barbarians point their thumbs
Downwards, chanting no mercy here,
No mercy here.

This is interesting when you consider that many see the first "terrorists" as being in response to Roman rule in the first century AD and possibly even further back. The historic comparison you present is really well constructed.
