If Only America Were AmericaLet America be America for once
Let it be the country it started out to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Let it be the home the immigrants seek
Let it be the land of opportunity
Where factory jobs are starting places
Where a College Degree is respected
Let it be the place where a middle class thrives
Where public schools are available for all
Where academics and not fairy tales are taught
Where public land is for all to enjoy its beauty
And it's not for sale to the highest bid
Let it be a home where everyone is free.
Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed—
Let it be the land where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
Where a man is never crushed by one above.
Let it be a land where women are respected
And are not treated like inferior, stupid beings.
O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
Let there be quality in the air we breathe
And have clean water for all to drink.
Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark?
And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?
I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart,
I am the African American bearing slavery’s scars.
I am the red man driven from the land,
I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek—
I am the woman struggling to raise children
On a salary still inferior to a man's
Finding only the same old stupid plan
Of dog eat dog, where mighty crush the weak.
