Standards

Will this poem pass muster
at the New England Poetry Club?
Will my friends at Poetbay
admire the line-breaks?
Would the bones of Dylan Thomas
approve that internal rhyme?
And what about Mom --
will she like that image,
that turn of phrase?

Why can't I write in meter?
Why am I being vague here?
Will I ever get specific enough?

Do I need more coffee
to start my brain?

Oh, yes, when in doubt, coffee.

Coffee approves.
Coffee is kind and merciful.
Coffee is my rod and staff,

my light in the darkness,

my strength and my song.

William Stafford, bless your ghost!
You who said there's no such thing
as writer's block!

"I just lower my standards
and keep going."

The word "standards" will always remind me of chemistry. But coffee, yes, that is good chemistry too. I always enjoy what comes out of your mind and how it enters mine. :)
