There is a photo from 1916 of her hanging from the crane. It is a bit disturbing so I did not put it up.

The Hanging of Mary

Murderous Mary met her end
A cautionary tale to all, my friend
Kingsport, Tennessee was the place
Every child there wore a shocked little face

Mary was an Asian elephant
Normally with a good temperament
She marched into the heart of the town
An unqualified trainer atop like some crown

She bent to eat a watermelon rind
A nice little sweet that her trunk did find
Her rider poked under her ear with his hook
Dear ladies and gentleman, thatís all that it took

She threw him hard up into the air
Then dashed his lifeless body everywhere
So they took Mary to a crane in a railway yard
Then they hung the poor girl by the neck so hard

People may care, people may cry
But no-one had heart for how she did die
Damned if they could think of a reason why
But an infected tooth makes a pained animals shy

A sad story well told, Dave.

I too am glad you didn't post the pic. What a sad tale, there's always a reason why, a crying shame those allegedly in charge didn't think before their actions.

Thanks for writing about this. I pray, hope, and have faith that nearly 100 years later mankind has learned to treat our animals better, to treat them with honor and respect. Sad are those who treat animals thus so for I fear they would treat humans the same if given the chance. Bullies will bully no matter what the species.

This is heartbreaking and shows how cruel man can be. I am glad you didn't post the picture. Animals react to pain just as we do and they cannot be blamed. What a sad story!
