"Devkota was a Nepali poet, playwright, and novelist. Honored with the title of Maha Kavi in Nepali literature, Devkota is by and large regarded as the greatest poet in the history of Nepal and Nepali language."

Reading Devkota in a Cowshed

Words collide and echo
In the backyard of my mind.

I know what this meansó
The forgotten language fights for itself.

Words kick at each otherís faces,
Bite their noses off,
Chew on their ears,
Try to rip off their hearts.

Watching the battle of forgotten words,
I canít remember the reason
Why I forsook the language
I loved the most.

I look around and see the stomping hooves,
Mosquitoes buzzing, hungry as ever.

Flies swarm in and out, unhurried.
Cows ruminate.

I notice the place where I once belonged,
Now distant, now out of touch.

In the nearby hills, the pine, the bamboos
Bend and wake in a law of waves.

Fists of rain come crashing down,
Acting as an ointment for bruised soul.

My heart beats, the pace quickens,
Only the words stop colliding.

They stand frozen
Like defeated soldiers in a battlefield.

Cows moo, wind rustles,
The damp air quivers.

In anguish, I close my eyes.
I breathe the airó
Taste it,
Swallow it.

Ah, how well it feeds my brain!

This air, pungent as it seems, is the only thing
I have not forgotten over the years.

What a fine poem. It's full of vivid sensations.

Holy shit.

You've done it. You're a poet.

I... I can't believe it.

I want that carved on my chest
