the great dichotomy

these are your two sides   as with most of us

laughter and tears

you delight with laughter   given and received

pour tears   bitter tears

for the great dichotomy ahead of us

the us of us no longer one

i sigh   you cry

holding one another closely

as i drift into stardust   and you

into heaven   i'm sorry

now   here   today   we sit and laugh

joshing   touching

doing all the things we do so well   happy

so unbelievably happy   with this underlying sadness

This is so heart-wrenching, so familiar, that it evokes memories of both dreams and realities...it calls up desires and fears... and longings for what was and what will never be.
So beautifully written, my heart hurts.

Such a poignant dichotomy of one human being with the two sides of life. Two parts holding each other tight with so much love and so much understanding. I was going to pick a favorite stanza but perhaps the last two at the end touched me the most. A sensitive and beautiful poem.
