I wrote this poem in September 2007, the first poem to break a drought that began a quadrennium earlier.

Struck Dumb

Struck dumb

longer than Zechariah:

to write, to sing, to pray --

for four bleak years

impossible.

Afterwards,

no benedictus comes,

instead, at best,

a stunted lament:

a scratch on silence

(not speech, not song);

forced, discordant note

cracking the voice

which once could much but now

can nothing do.

I wonder what was happening during those four years. A poem on that would be very telling. To break through and write again was a big healing, I am sure. The poem itself is very telling as well. Very good.

I get the sense, strongly, of "firstness," that it's coming back. Four years is a long silence for a writer.
