delphi

listening to colin's grandfather's records

jazz music

looking at the photographs

the early years   marriage   children   burgeoning vineyard

looking at the man

grey   weathered   ancient by my measure   thinking

how does one get from here to there

colin's grandfather

sets down his whiskey   his book   assesses

my expression   the music   the photographs

one day at a time   he says

one day at a time   it takes no effort   i shudder at his words

excusing myself   i find colin   take me dancing

now

To me in this poem, the word delphi simply means things that are old, like the grandfather and the old pictures, and the jazz, and then the fear of how quickly one can get from youth to there, so she decides to enjoy the present while she can. I like it very much.

Does the word "Delphi" have its Greek origins? Or does it simply refer to the fact that the speaker in the poem feels hollow towards the end? Curious.

I wonder more these days at the here to there, on good days it is my sanctuary, on others I need to "leave the building." Colin's grandfather has the gentle, wise words, I think it might be called contentment.
