A Christmas Triptych

A song of smoke whirls from chimney

snowflakes alight from darkened dome
onto the rooftops of cherished houses

Turtledoves seek haven at the hearth
fiery surprises masked in red & green
spin yarn in corners of childhood reach

Angels whirl amid fractions of ice
that dance        unstringed balloons
heedless of gravity

Midnight comes        candles flicker
to herald the coming of anointed children

Wise men bring stars

to face the desert chill

*

Mountaintop prophets

hold gloved hands
and wait for valley-bells

to wake the hills

Light watchful lanterns

in the clear holiday

*

Candle-bulbs & wreathèd trunks
fleeting carols sung to the wind
in anxious salutation

cloud-apparel
smoky breath
white-bearded fences

Walk through snow-robed pine-groves
greet friends gathered by a fireplace
music of gifts        jingle of chatter

loaves of fish & creels of Christmas bread

this night of affection

this night of faith
