A Christmas Triptych

(1)

A song of smoke whirls from chimney
snowflakes alight from darkened dome
onto the rooftops of cherished houses

the turtle-dove seeks haven at the hearth
fiery surprises masked in red & green
spin yarn in corners of childhood reach

an angel whirls amid fairy-frail fractions of ice
that dance like a company of unstringed balloons
heedless of gravity

midnight comes as the candle flickers
to herald the coming of anointed children
wise men bring stars to face the desert chill

(2)

Precarious peace lights vigilant lanterns
in the clear holiday

a pleasant shock enters the nerves
vested for celebration

mountaintop prophets hold gloved hands
and wait for valley-bells to wake the hills

a silver sound seeks the entrance
of diamond castles     palaces of dream

(3)

candle-bulbs & wreathèd trunks
fleeting carols sung to the wind
in tardy salutation

cloud-apparel
smoky breath
sugar-striped shivers
white-beard lamppost

long walks through snow-robed pine-groves
to greet friends gathered by a fireplace
the music of gifts      the jingle of chatter

loaves of fish & creels of Christmas bread

tinselled memories

a solstice of affection
& golden faith
