Raise them to be strong.

On Raising Daughters

Every time a parent
tells a daughter
that yelling at her
is done out of love

The parent teaches her to confuse
anger with kindness
which seems like a good idea
Until she grows up

To trust men who hurt her
Who yell at her
Because they seem
so much like you.

It is hard being a parent. especially as they get older. You end up advising but not being listened to and then watching things unfold in the hope that it all works out. Perhaps there is a balance between authority of respect and surreptitious advice, but I have not found it yet. This was good to read.

I think parenting is a tough job. So is being a child. As a child, I could never really please my parents. Pleasing people and being dutiful all the time is impossible. Anyway, I like your poem, but I think there can be another side to the story too. Form the child's perspective maybe! :)

Raising a son is fraught as well. I know that good intentions aren't enough as a parent.

Good thought for a poem, raise them to be strong. Maybe not so easy.

Good point. There are so many ways that even well-intentioned parents can damage their children.
