Not really a poem, but a personal rant. I have never felt so betrayed by my fellow Americans. Can't make myself go back.

2017 - Goodbye

During the end of the year 2016
We had so much hope
Exultation of elections
For an even better President.

I was with Bernie and his enthusiasm
Finally a compassionate, honest politician
Progress for the modern times
He drew crowds by the millions
But never made the press
His idealism, progressive thought
Excited the masses.

There was Hillary
The possibility of the first woman
To be President of the U. S. of America
Such a pride to women
Such a joy to hear her
Full of confidence, knowledge, and hope
Nominated as the Democratic candidate,
She became my hope.

Woe!! woe!! woe!!!
But who would so many vote for?
The one who had no respect for women,
Who made fun of the handicapped,
Encouraged hate and white supremacy
For the first time in my life
It made me doubt my country.

He took office at the beginning of 2017

He raised taxes for the masses
Gave tax cuts to the rich
Did away with environmental regulations
Does not believe Climate Change
Or it's caused by human negligence
He doesn't believe in education
or health care for those who can't pay.
Wars, wars wars! That's where the money is!

Someone else's child will fight the wars
Someone who believes in saving his country
Because he's been brainwashed to believe
That fighting for a Tyrant is a patriotic thing
Yet, there is no care of them when they come back
Heroes walk the streets shivering of cold and hunger
What kind of country is this?

Let them die! His speaker of the House said!
Do away with Public Schools, his Education Secretary said!
Cut the budget by cutting school lunches, Meals on Wheels for the elderly,
Medicare, Medicaid. Steal Social Security savings from the workers!
And that is only a fraction of his deeds.

Wow ... a year of nightmares
except I can't wake up.
The year of my discontent
The worst year of my life.
Goodbye, 2017!

It's refreshing but sad to read such an independent view of history unfolding in a country which considers itself a leader of nations.
As an outsider from the UK, I can only marvel at how eloquently you've managed to paint a picture of what is seen internationally as the wrong person for the job.
Seeing how you feel makes me believe that for once a change in one of the nation's famous phrases is needed.
'God help the United States of America'

I have learned to stay out of the politics of other countries. But I hear your grief.

It's been a nightmare, three more years of this and we won't recognize the planet. It will be a cinder.

Am I being too dramatic?

What's really sad is that next year probably will be even worse.

I'm with you, Ashe. Well said. Am afraid if he messes
with Social Security, lot of us will be dead. I liked him
at first till his mouth got too big. Lord have mercy on us.

I feel your pain Ashe, I'm in the uk, but still find it all totally unbelievable, the stuff nightmares are made of.
