Maybe Sometime This Week

We await the announcement that war has begun,
A little redundant, since war is ongoing. Our troops
Have been fighting for eons, it seems...but, this time,
They tell us, it's going to be different. We won't be
The thugs who invade some poor country and lose
To guerillas unable to leave. We'll be against people
Who fight in the open, who have and will use the same
Tools as we, and we'll learn what it's like when
The missiles are falling, when cities are ruined,
And Mommy and Daddy lie dead in their kitchen,
And disfigured children have nothing to eat. Later,
When millions no longer can hear it, another
Announcement will tell us which side is the victor,
Which one has collapsed in defeat.
