Way Past Midnight

and do you ever sit and wonder
what it takes
for an entire language to be forgotten?

-

do you tell yourself
the dead died in their sleep
so you may sleep well
and later die in peace yourself?

-

did you also
walk with them
through these dense clouds to look for God
never once looking at anything?

-

did you ask
your mother if she ever learnt any lullabies
or when she stopped singing them altogether?

-

do you want me to remember your songs
so I could remind you what you were
when you are not yourself?

-

do you blame
the hot, dry sun of your hometown
for sucking the ink of your pen dry?

-

did you learn
it in your tight hold
the fear of losing
when you held her after seventeen days?

-

did you weep
because the light
was simply so beautiful
in its passing through the leaves?

when the light and work of day are gone, these are the questions one asks. or, some ask. you ask.

we each have our own litany of doubts.

bravo, these flow down the page with ease, yet the questions are real and belie the ease.
