Break-up Villanelle

After Sylvia Plath

Look here, the email says she’s gone away.

Your life is now enriched, in fact, elated;

Is there anything more for me to say?

Why can’t we all be fearless to hold sway

Over our lives? Forget love, the ill-fated!

Look here, the email says she’s gone away.

You’re starting your life over, come what may.

Go soak yourself in wine, become inflated;

Is there anything more for me to say?

You’re sad? Morbid? Have your wits run astray?

Free bird, fly in directions undictated.

Look here, the email says she’s gone away.

Drink more, write more, keep all errors at bay—

These things will have your spirit elevated;

Is there anything more for me to say?

Now smile, now laugh, turn your past into clay—

The future lures you, sweetly decorated!

Look here, the email says she’s gone away.

Is there anything more for me to say?

A villanelle by a poet who can make it come to life. You have surpassed even yourself with this poem. Simply love the way you wrote it.

Speaker tries to set himself free from traumatic relationship yet merging it into the clay. He's skillful at overcoming the broken hearts. I Plunged deep into the enigma of love. I celebrate you for the beautiful mind you have.

Now smile, now laugh, turn your past into clay—
The future lures you, sweetly decorated!

You know how I reacted to this the first time I read it. I will add that a villanelle that doesn't read like a villanelle is rare and to be admired. This is to be admired. On top of that you've used humor, another rarity in formed poetry.

This is a lot of fun, good job, very skillfully written (and it is skillfully written without the "I.")

Excellent! Your dexterity with the form leads me to believe that you'll return to it quite often. Or at least I hope you do!
