I offer this poem in condolent solidarity with American Jews and with all those who grieve over the atrocity at Tree of Life, Pittsburgh. The poem records the memory of my first visit to a synagogue, June 2017.

Eitz Chayim

Verses from the Tehillim,

a song in a timeless tongue:

try the language of the hymn;

    words come out half-wrong.

Erev Shabbat: the temple

holds kind faces all around:

Adonai, Love Eternal,

    meets me where I stand.
