from 'These Fair Days'

"Me" and Colt are high school buddies, best friends. The scene is rural Oklahoma.

Comic Relief

Me and Colt stop at the cafe for breakfast

before headin’ over to the Strickers’.

We have a full day ahead of us

sortin’ pairs and workin’ calves,

not to mention shoein’ that old mare

Mr Stricker keeps around for no good reason.

I order the number-two special,

Colt orders runny eggs and burnt toast,

raw bacon and yesterday’s coffee with sour milk.

The waitress gives him a look to kill and says,

you see that on the menu?

Colt says somethin’ low under his breath

and the waitress says, you got somethin’ to say then say it.

Colt says, you sure as hell had it on the menu yesterday.
