First Glimpse, Amherst, 1989

When she walked

into the lecture-hall,

all dead hopes,

all vanished dreams,

all spent inspirations,

came to life again:

she was a song

by Fauré, a poem

by Estlin Cummings;

she was the earliest

ray of sunlight

on the youngest

freshest morning

of a newborn world.
