Interfaith Dialogue

Spirited, winsome, young and Jewish,
Nurse Becky pulled out all the stops
to summon a Catholic clergyman
to my bedside
to anoint me before my surgery.

She messaged the hospital chaplain.
She called my parish priest.
She probably would have e-mailed
His Eminence had I asked her to!

"You know," I ventured,
"if the priest can't make it,
you could always say
mi shebeirach for me!"

"Oh, no!" she insisted.
"Hebrew school drop-out here!
I've been to temple
only once in the last five years,
and that was to get married.
You probably know the mi shebeirach
better than I do!"

Charming! It made me chuckle (at the end). Thanks, Thomas!
