Mr. Stricker's advice to Laura and Colt

for Ogle (Buck) Hopkins

Look Up

Working too hard is a problem. I suppose

it's better that way than having no work at all,

though I can't say I'm sure about that.

Days slip by pretty fast. One day turns into the next,

one week, one month, one year, one decade.

This spinning planet doesn't wait for days off

or two-week vacations, it spins and it doesn't care

if you're along for the ride or not. It does have

something to offer. If your eyes are too focused on work,

or tending to matters that seem important but aren’t,

you won't see it. Look up now and then,

save a little something for yourself, for each other.

This spinning planet won't wait, won't care, won't slow down.

It goes on spinning, and in the end it spins you right into space.

I think we all deserve a little break from work now and then. We must "look up" and find joy in looking. Like you said, "[w]orking too hard is a problem." A poem with a lesson, coupled with the imagery of spinning planet, that teems with potency.
