A short dedication to Stevie Smith

Mr. Smith

(For Stevie)

We never saw him.
He left a towel on the beach.
He just swam on;
Until he was out of reach.

I've had a question about 'Mr. Smith' in the title. It is just the title, as Mr Smith is the swimmer; and not Stevie Smith the poet, who, as we all know was a woman.

That can be quite a sad impactful and resonant witness of a life, at its end ( it would seem, from the tone of the text. )

This may not be an appropriate comment, but,
it took guts to do what he did.

I hope I'm not misinterpreting the poem.
