e

songbird

everything about you appears simple

the straight limbs   the guileless smile

the direct gaze      nothing about you

is simple   i am mystified by the complexity

enchanted by the misdirection   at a loss

to reach the you of you   how many years

have we been at this   all the while

you have known me better than I have known myself

this elusiveness comes across as song

as melody   rhythm   breeze and rustling leaves

as harmonies   as flash of color

seen through greenery   as a songbird glimpsed

never close enough to touch   so i listen

and hear the song of intimacy implied

I wonder, if you did one day reach the Emerald City, the "them of them," and you saw behind the wizard's curtain, that the allure would be no more. I mean, do you ever really know someone, or want to? Are we not sometimes happier with the mystery? I guess, if you're there throughout the lions and tigers and bears ( oh my!), and you fight off the flying monkeys, then at least you have shared history and common ground. You may even sing a common song?

Beautiful! I especially love the choice of gaps that you have employed throughout the poem. I am glad to have read this wonderful work.
