Dear Barry John by M.A.Meddings

In the 1960's The Welsh fly half Barry John was considered one of the best in the world. I was a Rugby player in those days, and my Pal and I saved money all year to go to see England play Wales at Cardiff Arms Park. On the Friday night before the game we got drunk. We both missed the match as they wouldnt let us in because we were still drunk.

Max Boyces song Hymns and Arias rang in our ears as the crowd sang in unison.

And thus we reflected on Max Boyces humerous words

'There were forty thousand in the ground and me and Dai outside'

To be read slowly and with an exaggerated South Wales accent

Dear Barry John
You are turning it on
Tommorow PM
At the match

But tonight its alright
Cos try as I might
I cant forget her
What a catch

She's a fiery Welsh redhead
Is that enough said
And shes kissed me
So gently already

Dai dont let me down
She thinks im a clown
Now it looks like we
Might be go steady

I know we have tickets
But hell I feel wicked
And the girl says
Im turning her on

So Dai go on your own
Sorry I let you down
And Tell Max Boyce
Shes swerves better than Barry John

I just want to hear it. I cannot get that accent as I am a yankee. I can do a southern drawl, ya'll. But, I read with humor your predictament and then the love of the lass beat out all. Fiery Welsh redhead! Now that's a picture! loved this. xx kathy

Tender and humoristic about the young but still romantic hero!

I love this but I'm very biased. I was at college in Wales in the 70's. I'm English and I played hooker. I fear nothing now.
Strains of the 'Pontypool front row' echoing in my ears. W B Beaumont was the answer to all my fucking prayers. Great poem. Thanks for the memories.
