Inspired by Thomas Perdue's poem "It's Over..."
a very thought-provoking and must read poem.

Given The Choice, Would You?

Is it holding on to the past
That makes the past painful,
Or is it reflecting back on the memories
Of the past that make the past painful?

If you had the option,
Would you change the moments
Of your past that make up
Your memories, even if they were tragic?

Is there really a difference
Between holding onto the past and
Reflecting back on past memories?
Or are they so intertwined that there isn't one?

For us to have a past to reflect back on,
There have to be moments that
Make up, that become memories.....
Given the choice, would you change yours?

Our past is our history and it is our history that shapes us for better or for worst. The thing is what we choose to do with that in which we cannot change. Many times what does not kill us only makes us stronger. Never let go of a pleasant memory and even when tragic if you came out the better, wiser and stronger than that is not bad.

Not a one. I enjoyed the query - it's well written and provocative in a way. Happy trails.

I agree with tai chi italy, I believe that everything happens for a reason. And this is something I have thought about quite a bit, living in Saudi and all, I don't think I would change even the worst of memories, because it seems like life is a chain reaction, if you change one thing it would lead to the changing of another. I think that all the bad memories and the good have made me strong and I am who I am because of what happened in the past.
Great poem!

Memories are just memories. The "feelings" we attach to them is the question .
We cannot change the occurrence that created the memory, but we can change the feelings we attach to them, anytime we choose.

I choose to be grateful for all of my experiences, because each one has enlightened me as to who I am.
Love.

I do believe that ALL things work together for goood to those who love God. He will take even the most horrid moments of our past and bring good of it, much as Thomas says.

Your poem is great for reflection, Liz.

I have thought about this quite a lot liz, especially in relation to my dearly departed late husband, but after four years of wishing this and wishing that, I came to the conclusion that too many parts of my life would be missing that I couldn't do without if thing had been different for us, but not in relation to his death, more about the choices we made in the 23 years before! Everything is for a reason, is the conclusion I came to. Every little step leads to the next, and that is all we can depend on. Nice thought provoking poem on memory and change or not. Smiling at you, Tai

Given the choice probably I would
Change some of the unhappy past,
But I would not like to change the way
I tackled those moments, and overcame,
'Cause I would not be what I am today,
but for those moments, and how I reacted to them.
I would probably react the same way again
Were I to relive those moments again...

(((Hugs Lizzy for the thought provoking piece)))
