BASED UPON A FAMILY STORY MY DAD TOLD ME:

THE BUTTON HOLE

When my dad was a young lad , lads were never drest with out a button hole,

One evening ,his brother , Jo was in a right pickle , all worked up, for no flower

Had he no flower for his button hole,

His da , said ' what the hells all your noise about our, Jo, '' I need a flower for

My button hole , our da'' , '' their given prizes for the best ter night'' ,

''If thee thinks , thow's, can have one of me red roses , thee, can think again

Lad'',

'But da'' , '' but thee me nay buts lad'' ,

Jo was down cast , dad had spoken , and so he 'thourt that were that',

''Now sit down , lad , yer mam's got thee's tea ready'' , ''I'm going out ter

Guardan'', ''lets see what I can find for thee , if only to stop thee from

Mithering me, our Jo''

Only dad saw the glint in his fathers eye , a glint of mischief,

Saw, he'd noticed, he gave my dad the look , saying '' don't say a word , lad'',

The glint now hid, from site,

Jo sat gloomily , eating ,

After a while , hi da appeared , '' hear you are our Jo'' , ''rite fix this in thee's

Button hole'',

'' Thanks our da'' ,'' Ee it's champion'', '' what flower is it , our da?'' , ''Tater'',

''Get away'' , '' That's no tater flower , dad,'' ''Well lad, their is and their it is''

''Now away with thee to the dance''

Well off , Jo set , later back home he came, Jo, beaming a smile of victory,

''Well , Jo, lad , how'd thee get on?'' , '' I won!!'', ''I won first prize, thanks to

Thee our da''

'Our da'', ''the judges would not believe it were from a tater flower!!'', ''till I

Reminded 'em , who were me da!!

*smiles* I'm sadly ashamed to say that I just googled potato flowers, lol, but I enjoyed this story very much! It has such a kind and warm feel to it.

lol that is so funny... Jo won because of his dad's recognized humor it seems to me lol :) a flower from a potato plant? lol

loved the dialogues in old english here... made me visualize a patriarch kind of setting.. and the head of the family being a bit of a comedian ;) and obviously caring for his son's dilemma at that moment.... :)

''lets see what I can find for thee , if only to stop thee from
Mithering me, our Jo" - i could just imagine this hehe :) ... i always find the british expression mithering so on the mark to describe the feeling of being bothered or annoyed, makes me smile every time... :)

thanks for these great stories, this is just delightful :) *hugs* xx
