A short blank verse piece on how memories of a lover can continue to torture despite the time together may have been long ago. It was deep emotion that led to this poem.

Painful Memories

The memory of your face still lingers
Although you departed long ago
Who knows for just how long
I will keep thinking about you.
These memories pain and torture me
That sometimes I wonder if I'm alive
But what I just cannot deny
Is that I'm alive under this dark blue sky.
My desire for you has not lessened
No matter how far you are away from me
Over time I have developed the habit
I'm now used to living this way.
These memories will continue to torture
Forget them, erase them forever.

Memories!!!
If only one could swish them away!!!
But, Alas!!!
There is a beautiful couplet of Ghalib, the most celebrated Urdu poet of all times, which goes some what like this:
"Memories of yore are a torture,Oh, Lord! Take away my power of remembrance!"
(((((hugs to ease that pain))))

Painful memories do tend to hang on longer, and just when you think they've gone they jump up and bite once more, well written :-)
