My mate Daniel V. [not on P.B]
helped me by creating a pro/con list
and I haven't written in this style before, but it's meant
to be like you're watching a debate on t.v. and
you draw your own conclusions.

*Euthanasia Debate

The audience cheers as
the Dean steps up on the podium.

"Ladies and Gentlemen,"
The Dean says into the mic,

"These two people behind me,
are not here to tell you what to think,
but rather to encourage you to think
for yourselves and make up your own
mind on a difficult topic.....Euthanasia."

[Clapping of audience in background]

[The Dean speaks into the mic]
"On my right debating
FOR euthanasia is Lynn....."

[More Clapping from audience]

"And on my left debating
AGAINST euthanasia is Peter."

"Who would like to start this debate?"
[Lynn puts up hand]

"Ok Everyone,"
The Dean says into the mic,
"Lynn will start us off on why
we should legalise euthanasia."

[Audience cheering as Lynn steps
up to the mic, notecards in hand.]

"Thank you everyone,
I believe legalisation of euthanasia
is better then people getting dodgy
drugs on the black market....."

[Peter Interrupts]

"But if we legalise euthanasia
how can we safeguard
against abuse, if we allow one person
to take their life because of their pain,
how do we know it won't be unfairly
used against the disabled and people
who have spinal accidents....."

[Lynn, glaring at Peter]

"I believe it's a freedom of choice.
And death for some is the only way
for them to get relief when the drugs
they're on NO longer work, we should
RESPECT their wishes to end their suffering....."

"BUT....." [Peter interrupts]
"Is it really ending their suffering, or
are we as relatives, being selfish by
making ourselves feel better by not
watching them suffer anymore."

[Lynn grabs mic]

"But how can we allow such double
standards to occur in today's society,
We happily put our pets down to end
their suffering and we waste millions of
dollars on war....."

[Peter grabbing mic back]

"But in today's society, we have a moral
duty to help life not murder it to make ourselves
feel better. If we can afford it to give them a better life
through better care then reason says we must help
them, there is alway hope as long as there's life."

[Audience cheering and clapping]

[Lynn steps back up to the mic.]

"But in the long run it is cheaper
to allow a terminally ill person their dignity
in death then it is to prolong their suffering,
shouldn't we as a society save the money
and the beds for a patient who isn't terminally
ill, who we know will get better, rather then waste
years of money prolonging the inevitable, money
that could be spent on better care and more
doctors to help those who will get better."

[Dean steps in]
"As we have only a limited
time allowed for this debate, Peter
do you have any closing arguments?'

[Peter nodding head yes.]

"I would like to say that while
some valid points have been made by Lynn
for euthanasia, again I ask how appropriate
is it for us to choose life or death for someone.
Without the right safeguards in place, managed by
the right people, how can we not be sure it won't be
abused."

*I am not trying to sway anyone's opinion,
personally I am for euthanasia, which is why I
have tried to present it as an impartial debate
on the pro's and con's of allowing or disallowing
legalised euthanasia. I am sorry if this offends
any person's religious beliefs hence why it's neutral
with no argument in that area.

Hello Liz its been a while.
Interesting subject, l do not agree with you but l will defend your right to say what you want.
Its a very sticky sibject, one that brings out the worse in people and the fires of anger flame very hard on both sides.
MY own thinking is that when hope has truelly really gone and there is no hope at all that the person will recover, then as hard as it is you must turn off the machine.
I pray to God that none of us ever have too and my sympathies to those who have had to make that decision.
But wether we agree or not, let us pray that life is life and trust is trust and truth begats truth in all things and this euthinasia os not used for anything other than mercy, which is why l do not agree because there are people out there who will use it for, their purposes and greed.

Hope you are well Liz.

Personally I believe that we should have the right ! I do have faith but my faith is that of a forgiving one - God gave us free will, that was his gift.

Thought provoking, I don't want to enter a debate, just my thoughts as a member of the human race

This is a very interesting and important subject. You have done well in your presentation. I have to come down on the side of life. The human being has more value than an animal. The Human has a soul. It is not our right to decide when that soul should leave the body. That right is God's. We have the means to keep people from suffering as they await their death, and should apply all of them. But euthanasia is another step down a very dangerous road that leads to killing those we deem undesireable. It leads to Hitler's solution. It leads to Holocaust.
