today we gaveour baby a name
her name is jenni
(it was supposed to be jennie)
but her father got confused
in the delivery room
and she was screaming so loudly
he misspelled it.
the doctors said
her skin had a yellow sheen so
they put her by the window,
in front of the sun
for her to gaze at
(her mother says,
when you were a baby,
you were scared of everything
you cried
and you wanted things to go away)
and it hasn't changed
because
she remembers
her birthday
and she cries
like those first few minutes
when she realized
she was breathing
