the International Library of Poetry sent me a letter...

Disillusionment

"congratulations!" they tell me
"your poem has been selected
as a semifinalist in our contest
and we would like to publish it in our book"

"the book will cost you 50 bucks if you want to actually own one"

pleased at being appreciated,
I thought maybe I'd just let them publish my poem
without buying the book

then I looked up the organization online
"SCAM!" screamed countless angry writers
"everyone who enters is a semifinalist
they make all their money duping unsuspecting
entrants into buying books of their own poetry"

Its not that I mind the book scam-
If people want to see their poems
published in a nice-looking anthology
that is for them to decide

But I was so pleased to get the letter...
I was tricked into believing that someone
actually thought my writing was above average

If everyone who submits a poem is a semifinalist
Then chances are no one even read it
I guess I'm hurt,
And a little angry

I wonder if the 'winners' are real people...
