started this months ago and just came back to it tonight. I need a little Summertime Fun right now.

Summertime Fun

dragonfly colors flicking by
butterfly patterns engage the sky
mosquitoes buzzing in the night air
crickets rubbing their legs without care

leaping toads and jumping frogs
rolly poley bugs hidden beneath logs
scattering chipmunks running play
over the ivy and under the hay

barefoot babies toddling fall
in wildflower meadows growing tall
grasshoppers spitting tobacco hop
cicada singing without a stop

bluegills swimming in current streams
mud daubers swarming 'round rotting beams
green snakes slide over rocks and glades
mama's making pink lemonade

gnats hovering around dirty necks
sweat bees stinging, hurt like heck
ice cream churns and bellies growl
hound dog sniffs then stops to howl

setting sun leaves purple hues
on children jumping rope by twos
evening comes in silent splendour
summertime fun as I remember

This is a perfect description of our summer days on McDonald Avenue. I love it, (except the part about the snake). I can see pictures accompanying these verses making a great children's book. So, a song and a book, not bad for a poem!

I love this! I would love to create a song with these words....they are perfect to set to music!

Beautifully written piece Kathy! I love it reminds me of being a kid and we squeezed our own lemons listened to the frogs and all of it. Only difference it wasn't pink lemonade. I hated the bees, and mosqutioes, but everything else here I loved as I did back then.
You my friend are a terrific writer with a great imagination that can really put the imagery in your poems.
Take care.
