One never really knows what one will encounter when one goes walking late at night...

While the City Sleeps

While the city sleeps
I roam the streets
Feeling a sense...
Of contentment and peace
I see the homes
Where lights shine dimly
And I know that
Life and love go on...

But out here...
Out here I'm all alone...
While some may wonder
At my plight
To walk the streets on through the night
I feel grounded...
Feel content...
Feel at home
And yet...tonight...
No...not tonight...

The wind has shifted
And sudden sleet stings me
And still...
It's not the elements
That cause my concern tonight...
No...not the elements
The wind though bitter
Will just blow through me
I've made my peace with it
Long ago
The rain, the snow
They comfort me...
And wash away my sorrows
No...it's not the elements
That cause my concern
Not tonight...

As if I passed through electric field
I sense that which I'll have to deal
My nerves on end are cautious now
And I watch out...
For I know...
Yes I know that "harm" is near !

Has it followed from my home ?
Has it stalked me while I roam ?
What of this car..
That slowly crawls by...
Then turns around to be beside me...
Who else would wake at 2:00 am
To walk the streets...
Be ye foe...or be ye friend ?
I think I'll pass you by...
I walk slowly and deliberate
Controlling nerves and urges...
To run like the wind !

Do not show fear I tell myself
And inside, all the while...
My soul speaks to me...

If this be "Harm" that I have seen...
Then send a message clear
I do not fear thee...
No...I know thee !
And if you know what's good...
You'll keep out of My way !

Now then...
Let me enjoy my walk...
In peace !

jenks The PoetBay support member heart!
this has been well thought out and I like the conversational way you write...it adds an immediancy to it that gives it an edge.
and I like such observations.
