The Servo

there's a silence

we both stare at the EFPOS machine
willing it to work faster
20 seconds can be a really long time

I catch his eye and we both
do the thing two straight guys always do
in situations like this

nod and look away

he breathes deeply and exhales a tired night
through pursed lips

I turn and peer at my reflection in the dark windows
and think about why I shouldn't
shop at 24 hour servos
at 3 in the morning

the reflection is looking back at me
wondering if the servo guy
is wondering what I'm doing
up at this time of night

there's the thin grind of a printer
and we face each other again

we call each other mate in our
unenthusiastic farewells

I grab my milk
and begin the empty street-lit
walk home
