I used to like this one, but now it bugs me! I can't figure out why.

The Postgrad

You spend so much time reading,
you don't know you're the last person
in the Cafeteria. Sitting there,

your cup of coffee – gone cold – as you
turn another page.
Life outside the windows

goes to sleep unnoticed
as you read all about the world.
About the your place in it.

Your future place in it.

You spent so much of your life
just getting here. So many hours
awake at your desk.

So much worrying
about lecture times,
due dates,
bus timetables,
library times,
bed times.

How many times have you given up?
Thought seriously about mowing lawns
for a living?
Just mowing lawns.

With a sigh, you close the book,
and check your watch. You take
another book from a pile on the table,
and open it.
