One can only hope...

Could We?

So much good to see, but we chose to be
Taken in by the evil of it all
We stand in line at the scene of the crime
Just to witness a fellow man fall

What is it in us, are we just curious
To be drawn to the morbid and dark?
Or conditioned this way, it's not safe to play
Without friends anymore in the park

It's there on the news, the whole world views
The ugliness we're capable of
If we all strived for good, do you think that we could
Change the world simply with love?

I don't know, but I've always felt that part of the problem, especially in the US where I live, is an oppressive attitude that is falsely called optimism. Yes, there's nothing wrong with having a positive attitude, but I think that too often people ignore bad things because it makes them uncomfortable. In order to change things, it's necessary to admit that they are there--to get a dialogue going.

Also we're bombarded every day with music, films, books, and other media that seem to promote the very worst in us. I'm opposed to censorship of any kind, but one has to wonder why so much of our entertainment today consists of violence and selfishness. But let me jump down from my soapbox, long enough to comment on what a fine poem you've written on this subject. Every word rings true.
