Erase

Scratch out my name from your mind
Erase every thought of our time
Togetherness was never ours to find
And the prophecies of stars were no sign

Let my name feel a stranger on your lips
And my eyes, be nothing but empty pools
We are autumn leaves like pages ripped
From books that we once read at school

Dig a hole in the graveyard of lovers
Remove our initials from the tree
The sky is a blank sheet above us
And when you look, you won't see me

Forget the melodies that made us so merry
And the laughter and loving on cold nights
The end, was an unfinished symphony
And the future, was never in our sights

Wipe out all memory, remove every stain
Wine turned to acid from bottles never poured
A conquest is shallow, where there is nothing to gain
This our last flight, forever doomed as we soared.

Yeah well, good luck with that. It pains me to see you so unhappy, Elle.

That's a lot of way to say it's over! The barrage of similes and metaphors definitiely makes the point; I like especially "Remove our initials from the tree."

As Proust pointed out (after 4000 pages or so of copy), we can't really erase memories--they're always there, lurking. Every now and then one of them will leap up at me from out of the blue and no matter how I swat and scratch at it, I know it will be back, buzzing and wheezing.

Well-shaped and styled poem, atmospheric and heart-felt.

A bittersweet poem which brings to mind the rhythms of W. H. Auden.

If only we could erase , rub out , delete ,
Those who have heart, used , misused us ,
But think of them with us no longer or part ,
Of their life's ,
Then we can smile , a biter , yet sweet smile,
The victory is ours!
