I was aghast to hear on a recent visit to England that corn has been made conveniently shorter to suit the machines.

Short Corn

Is it really true?
The corn is intentionally shorter?
Aught we manipulate nature
This way?
To service collective machines.

As we look into our mirrors
Let us hope and wonder
If our sharp tongues are
Long enough.

Short corn is not elegant.
It cannot dance or sway
In the necessary ways.

Is it true?
Are our very fields controlled now?
I wonder if we are tall enough
To wonder where we may dance
In a long corner.

The short corn is marginally less incredible than banana's that have the bend taken out through breedng so they can be a neat fit in boxs.

I am just hoping this isn't true, but I suspect with our world of convenience it probably is, your third stanza says it all.

I live in England, and am shocked to hear this! Unfortunately it seems all to fitting in the modern world...Great poem, though I am sorry it had reason to be written. Charlie
