When You Know It's Over But . . .

There’s an agony in the air,

Whimpers no one hears,

A dark beautiful animal

Struggling body and mind

In a steel trap and chain,

Torn between the pain

And the fearful courage

To gnaw flesh and desire

To a crippled freedom.

Before the feral cats took over my yard, I used to get a lot of mice in the basement. I trapped them. Those which weren't killed could go two ways. Some fairly quickly gave up and died of shock. Some really did chew off limbs. I don't see what the cats do with mice. I'm just glad that I don't have to set out those traps anymore.

Well captured, it made me think and re-read it twice, do you mean fearless courage:? "Torn between the pain
And the fearful courage" Because you cannot be free if you are not intelligently fearless. Hm, maybe you are right: fearful courage = crippled freedom or:?
