While looking through a window at 35,000 feet over the Rockies

Nature's Grace

The grandeur of the world unrolls beneath me
Snow caps and barren valleys
I feel aloof
To the humanity of the cabin
Fellow travelers bound in solitude
Physical intimacy of a jumbo jet
That demands the introspection
Of being alone
Clouds beneath me
Sun above
This micro world is thankfully fleeting
The awe my eyes absorb
Is much too fairy like
To support itself
Frozen lakes that would defeat a day's trek
Are held below as postage stamps cluttering a desk
Jagged peaks reach up to me as serrated
Sharks teeth distant and harmless
But not to those who would wander them
Updrafts shake my technological aerie
In gentle reminder that I am here through
Nature's grace alone

I meant to say "with opposing poles" . . . I keep telling myself to proofread my comments first and still usually don't.

That feeling of aloofness is something I hadn't thought about in a long time, being retired and no longer traveling frequently, but it's true, or at least a feeling shared. That forced physical proximity engenders not intimacy but defense of what little personal space one has, rather like two magnets with opposite poles. And true too the wonderfully apt simile of scenery as postage stamps cluttering a desk. In the "good old days" we traveled by train, part of the terrain (no pun intended), passing through places rather than above them. One could say that he had actually "been" somewhere, if only briefly.

Had a similar feeling while driving on the way to Khardungla Top (Ladakh, India), the highest motorable road in the world. You can see stretches and stretches of desolate beauty and feel you do not belong here and yet somehow you belong by 'Nature's Grace'.
Thanks a lot for sharing.

LOL,
Amy
