Eyes

Your laughing eyes lift
my tattered soul
above the drench of sadness
Your impassioned eyes hold
my breathless self in loving thrall
Your quiet eyes calm
my furtive restless spirit
Your loving eyes wrap
my lonely heart in soft embrace
Your flashing eyes guard
Tomorrow's fearful gate
Your tearful eyes bring
my aching heart to its knees
Your knowing eyes
Give answer to unspoken words
Your triumphant eyes speak
Of honored battles bravely won
Your accepting eyes
Hold fast against the dull anguish
Of the unchangeable
Your closed eyes
are my forever loss.

Well done!

Whoever said that eyes are windows into the soul was right, but you've turned that around, made of them mirrors into your own soul, which is no less right, the revelation and introspection that poets dare and only the very good ones do well. I didn't see the last lines coming . . . they make all the preceding ones even more poignant and personal than they already were.
