A Starless Night

I don't think it's a look out at the stars sort of night
or even make a wish on a moon so bright it etches
misplaced objects and broken hearts taking flight

it's a moonless night and a starless sky,
the voice on your lips burns with a lie and
I don't see scarlet on a morning horizon.

The vista has narrowed and the cool winds blow,
the ice on the tor, burns, blackening skin with frost
and I move, my body cantered over a wilderness lost.

No, there will no secret trysts, mapping stars
for at this moment, you have never felt so far from me,
I see possibilities but am powerless to act

There is a void, a flaw in the reasoning of love
I am no seasoned traveller, just a refugee in flight,
I would so banish the blackness, press a switch for light,

fly through the window, cotton sheets like streamers
that ace and shriek, brightening the world in lightening streaks.
I do not think that there will be stars out tonight.

The moon affects not only the ebb and flow of seas but our emotions . . . I feel it too when its not there to contemplate, how love too is a reflection of the beloved, and I lose a necessary perspective when stars are obscured, feel smaller and more alone. This is a very fine poem Elle and I think you have touched something eternal.

Almost the antithesis of the typical romantic poem--this time the sky is starless and moonless and no bright promise of a brilliant new dawn is suggested. All the props of the stereotypical ode to love and nature have been removed and what remains is pure expression.

and yet, we know the stars are ALWAYS out, just obscured by temporary atmospheric conditions. Tomorrow they may twinkle and dance like they never have before.

Excellent composition.

This piece definitely gives the reader the chills of the starless night, I feel lost love, depression, hoping this is just your muse talking Elle. If it is or it isn't, it is beautiful, emotive writing.
