NOTE: "Imeldific" is a new English word accepted by Merriam Webster which describes behavior or a characteristic emulative of Imelda Marcos.

The Imeldific Cat

She is partially feral,
in that under certain
negotiated circumstances she
allows herself to be touched
but does not have
a need for constant
human contact. I'm
startled to hear the
"mee-ow" projected
across the garden, she
has announced her
arrival and comes with
a high step and high
hips in a confident
gait parading herself.
What scheme has she
concocted today turning
on the charm under
the blue sky? Well,
she must be hungry.
I pour her dry food
into her night bowl.
She affects apathy,
lays down on the deck,
in the sun and stretches,
her claws extend and
reach for something,
she opens her mouth
in an arrogant yawn
then adopts the regal
pose of a tiger laying
in the jungle, head
erect and eyes peering
at the vulnerable world.
I approach and she
does not run but consents
to be petted, rubbed
behind the ears. I lift
her up and look into
her peering yellow eyes
into the depths
of cunning and knowledge
of the Law of the Jungle.
The claws emerge,
a warning. She struggles,
I set her down.
She comes to the
night bowl and sniffs
then munches the
chicken meal pellets.
I scratch her ears,
she is unaffected,
as if to say,
"go ahead and scratch."
She finishes her meal.
I come to scratch
her again. There are no
chicken pellets left.
She stares at the empty
plate and considers
a transaction as my
fingers come close.
No deal. I'm out of
equity. She runs.
The operant
part of the "mee-ow" was
"meeeeeee."

Enjoyed, as a secret cat lover, never had one because of allergies. But I did have a visit once to the "shoe room" of Imelda. It was as stunning as that treasure trove scene in "National Treasure!" No kidding.

Great one. I've known,(and nurtured),three cats in my time, but never "owned" one.
