literary music

I sat by the keyboard

with trimmed nails to stop the clatter

where my hands had been before

etudes and scales

and proper fingering

both kinds of keyboards

I wrote poetry and short stories

recipies, crimes

and children's tales

at the back of my mind

the music of words

I'm a bit musically challenged, so I am also a bit envious of those who hear the music in words and can sit down at the keyboard (the black and white one), and express thoughts. But, glad for you.

So many years ago now I too played "both kinds of keyboards," practicing piano and pecking away at my grandmother's old typewriter, learning that both notes and words were things to be touched, tones and rhythms and textures and forms, how both were a way of becoming in touch with myself. And still are.
