A short character study of a flawed hero

High Noon

He is a proud man
Tall and well set
A public sinner
Come to terms
With his error
Forgiven by those
Who care
Disliked by those
Who don't

He walks unbent
With purpose
Yet with a grace
An openess
A gentleness
Which only comes
From vanquishing
The dragon of
imposed self doubt

His comport comforts
Those in need of solace
His kindness inate
Unconscious
His generosity
As normal as a
Deep breath
His strength theirs
For the taking
Earned in lonely
Self awareness
Valued only in
Its giving

John Wayne always seemed to me someone larger than life, and in that sense someone one might like to have been but could never really relate to; he was bigger and better than we would ever be. Gary Cooper was someone I did relate to but only when I was older, someone merely mortal who struggled, doubted, feared and sometimes failed, showing us how in the end the courage to face the bad guys is something come to only after facing ourselves. He was flawed, just as we are, but he showed us that character is often what we make of our failings and flaws needn't be fatal.

Like Atticus Finch, G.C. displayed a quiet, heroic manliness, the sort that makes the rest of us stand a little taller ourselves.

This is nicely done, understated, as was the man. That you chose this character to sketch says something about yourself (as all poems do).
