Treasure/A Poem in Two Voices

as she watched over her

tracing her finger on the curve of
pushing the matted tangles against
this child's face
this woman's mane
looking beyond her years
seeing what once was
passed sights still unseen
where had she gone?
blurred edges uncertain
unchangeable
unclear
complete.

she realized the variations

of hues on her skin
of wrinkles around her mouth
of thoughts on her brow
of vague dreams in her eyes
of youth
of ancestors

on her hands

untouched and untilled
gilded and strong

as she watched over her

this daughter
this mother

in her place
of serenity
in time

she pondered these things
in her heart
and her heart
began
to
swell
