it is what it is

it is what it is
even when you do it
really good

it is what matters
not its appreciation
it is the thing

thus the one word
rolled itself in batter
before frying itself

it does not matter
for it will be it
whether it moves or not

it can even be a verb
or an adjective
it will still be it

it is the fabric
where breathing
is made into it

it will be there
when there is no there
nor its opposite

it is not I
but it surely can be
if I sleep

it can drink beer
and smoke shitty cigarettes
it can go astray

without I it can be lost
it must be observed
to be it or not it

I think I'd never really appreciated how important the English word 'it' is. Unlike Spanish, French, and Italian and many other languages, English words (except for obvious nouns such as 'man' or 'girl') are not gendered. 'It' is one of the few words that we can use when we don't know the gender of, say, a dog or a baby--much more polite than 'that thing'. I like the way you note that so many things can be summed up as 'it.' Take that word out of English grammar and we'd be in deep water indeed.

Excellent poem.

There is no doubt that it is what it is.
