TOMMY ATKINS AND HIS SOLDIERS BIBLE (WW1)

Now when Tommy joined up
He had to swear on a bible
Say and oath of loyalty
To the King , and to all those set up above him

Then after they gave Tommy that bible
To give him comfort and inspiration
To fight the good fight

Now way back then many smoked of course
Many a lad , liked a pipe of backer
Some rolled their own
Well pipes broke , there was a shortage of paper
To roll backer in

Now thats when Tommy , found a use for their soldiers bible
It is thin paper as you know , right handy they found
Rip a page out , in with the backer , a ciggy ready
Lick of the tong across the edge of the paper
Many must of seen the irony when reading the page first
And read the ten commandments, eyes falling on
'' Thou shalt not kill! '' , spiting a bit of stray backer in the mud
With a look of scorn , putting a lit match to the cigaret
Coughing , as his lungs fills with smoke

Then sharpens his bayonet , reading for the next time

This one packs a punch! Who would have thought?
Somewhat appropriate use under the circumstances.
